The client’s goal was to create an experience for the users of ALX Community. There were no set finish standards or concepts for the new facility. The design approach was about creating a new environment that evoked the senses and provide a functional and stylish environment in which to conduct business. The other goal was to have a better, more integrated design process that included not only the design, but the integration of furniture, technology, and construction delivery of the project.
The design incorporated several architectural design elements to create a layered and cohesive design experience. Half arches and expanded archways frame interconnecting functions throughout the space. Modern use of wood trim, embossed ceilings and brass accents complete the eclectic and boutique design experience. Nods to eclectic row house entries, tree lined streets and gardens throughout Old Town Alexandria are expressed through scenic wall coverings and metal fence motifs. Views are anchored with layers of decorative furnishings, accent lighting and unique full-size wall murals and artwork. The eclectic furniture selection is as important as the architectural features to create the mood. The space has an inherent sense of comfort and approachability.
The project successfully reinterprets historic design elements in a modern way into the community and workspace that have garnered praise from its users for its unique experience that creates an escape from their typical day-to-day office environment, positioning the new space as an in-demand leasing option for tenants.
