FOX Architects Recognized by the AIA Northern Virginia Chapter with Two Design Awards

WASHINGTON, DC, June 15, 2016 – FOX Architects, LLC, an award-winning architecture and interior design firm, was recognized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) last night at the AIA Northern Virginia Design Awards celebration held at LMI Government Consulting’s headquarters in McLean, Virginia. FOX Architects was recognized with an Award of Merit for their design of OGSystems, located in Chantilly, Virginia, and with a Jurors’ Special Citation Award for the design of Hudson Institute in Washington, DC.

Hudson Institute, Jurors’ Special Citation Award for Commercial Interiors

Hudson Institute is a renowned organization that challenges conventional thinking across national and international public policy sectors. For its new, centrally-located DC headquarters, Hudson capitalized on the opportunity to modernize its facilities and capabilities. To accomplish this, the FOX Architects design team sought to create a space that would define a new architectural aesthetic that adhered to Hudson’s academia-focused culture. After analyzing the challenging floorplan, the design team generated a parti-diagram which was built upon a processional axis from the conference center to the office areas. This axis was defined in the ceiling through an elegant band of reclaimed wood served as a connection from public to private spaces. Reinforcing the academic theme, the design team visually layered different materials and textures to create a sense of depth and richness in a modern space. The use of wood, stone, metal and glass are layered thoughtfully and integrated with black and white mural graphics to create a sense of history and identity.

The FOX Architects team included: Andy Yeh, Suzanne Zecchin, Christina McEnroe, Samira Ghadimi, Melanie Robins, and Dana Biedrzycki. The general contractor was HITT Contracting.

OGSystems, AIA Award of Merit for Commercial Interiors

The FOX Architects design team worked with OGSystems on a new approach to the typical government contractor aesthetic, creating the “office evolved.” This is highlighted with an unexpected central stair, evolved past a means of vertical transport into a multi-functional, collaborative area that encourages connectivity; immersing visitors into OGSystems’ culture upon entering the space. This concept continues as the traditional hallway is evolved into a processional experience, highlighting firm identity and mission, while delineating circulation from open work areas. In lieu of partitions, spaces are defined through architectural masses of color and texture. Workstations are subtly demarcated with ceiling and floor planes. The “Ideate Café” is a bright, airy lounge where staff can unwind. The “Boost Pub,” with its pub atmosphere, functions as an amenity, with an adjacent garage door that opens to a large presentation space providing for flexible networking events. Every part of the space serves both form and function, offering workstyle alternatives. It is a true blend of East Coast efficiency with West Coast spirit.
